University officials announced Saturday that the SDSU campus will be closing from 7 a.m. Sunday through Monday night because of a winter storm predicted to hit the area.
According to a release from University Marketing and Communications, normal operations are scheduled to resume Tuesday, but University officials will monitor the conditions and make changes as needed.
Certain buildings on campus will remain open both days but may see some changes from normal operation.
Residence halls will be open and will have staff at the front desks from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on both days. The Miller Wellness Center will also remain open both days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for general recreation and fitness but no programming will be available.
The release also states that essential employees, defined in SDSU policy 10:7 and the university’s continuity of operations plan, will still report to work as assigned.
This announcement comes after the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Brookings County and the surrounding area beginning Sunday at 4 a.m. and lasting until Tuesday at 7 a.m.
The weather service is predicting heavy snow accumulations of 8 to 14 inches and winds gusting as high as 50 mph across central and southeast South Dakota.
The NWS says areas of blowing snow could reduce visibility which could affect travel in the area. They also say that if you must travel to have an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle.
