SDSU junior Zeke Mayo and sophomore William Kyle III were named Summit League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year League officials announced Thursday.
Mayo was the top scorer on a South Dakota State squad that won at least a share of its fifth regular season title in the past six seasons, finishing the campaign with a 12-4 record. He is the fourth different Jackrabbit to earn Player of the Year honors during that stretch (Mike Daum, 2018; Douglas Wilson, 2020; Baylor Scheierman, 2022).
The Lawrence, Kansas, native averaged 21.1 points per game and made a Summit League-best 42 3-pointers in conference play to earn All-League First Team honors for the second consecutive season. He averaged 22.0 points per game as the Jacks closed the regular season with five straight wins.
William Kyle III was named the Defensive Player of the Year becoming the first SDSU player to garner those honors since Cody Larson in 2015.
Kyle III was the League’s top shot blocker, swatting away 36 shots in 16 League games, while also recording three double-doubles and ranking fifth in rebounding averaging 7.1 per game. He also averaged 14.0 points per game and shot a League-best 63% from the floor to join Mayo on the All-League First Team.
The two Jackrabbits join Kansas City’s Jamar Brown, Denver’s Tommy Bruner, Omaha’s Frankie Fidler and North Dakota’s B.J. Omot on the Summit League first team.
SDSU senior Charlie Easley also landed some awards being named all-Summit League Honorable mention as well as joining Kyle III on the conference all-defensive team.
The Jackrabbits will be taking on either No. 8 Oral Roberts or No. 9 South Dakota, who play Friday, at 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
