Swiftel Center to host PRCA Rodeo Friday and Saturday

Tickets are on sale now for the two-night Brookings PRCA Rodeo at the Swiftel Center on Friday, and Saturday.

Rodeo coach Ron Skovly said four of the athletes participating are members of the SDSU rodeo team. Carson Houser will compete in bull riding, Rafe Weintjes in tie-down roping and Shannon McBride and Arabella Cook competing in barrel racing.

The rodeo will feature bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. Kids can join the fun by participating in mutton bustin’ and the boot scramble.

Last year 3,700 people attended the rodeo, which was a record, according to Ashley Biggar, the director of marketing for the Swiftel Center. Biggar also said that with more pre-sale tickets being sold this year they hope to see closer to 4,000 this weekend.

Dacy Buerkle, a sophomore animal science major at SDSU, attended the rodeo as a freshman last year.

“I personally enjoy watching the timed events like steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping,” she said. “I am super excited that it is back again this year and have already bought tickets.”

The Brookings PRCA Rodeo is produced by Sutton Rodeo of Onida, South Dakota. Sutton Rodeo is a sixth-generation company established in 1926. They are best known for Top Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year, Bucking Stock of the Year and Hall of Fame Stock Contractor James Sutton Sr.

The rodeo will have back-to-back performances on Friday and Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m., with tickets available for purchase through the Active Heating Box Office in the Swiftel Center and online at www.Ticketmaster.com.

General admission tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 3 to 12, and kids 2 and younger are free. SDSU students can buy $15 tickets at the box office if they have their student ID. All fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets anytime this week to avoid the lines.

The first five rows of seating are available as reserved seating for $30 a seat. A VIP ticket will reserve a table next to the rodeo arena on a first-come, first-served basis costing $100. The Swiftel Center has also started to include cocktail tables and a party deck that businesses can rent in advance.

According to Biggar, the Swiftel Center started as an agricultural multiplex, and since 2002 the rodeo has been a foundational event for the building.

“It’s a cross-generational event that you can do with grandparents, parents and kids,” she said. “Rodeos mean a lot to the people in our region and fans coming out to see the competitors is great.”

The fans are encouraged to wear pink Friday night for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink theme, where 100% of the campaign proceeds will be donated to the Brookings Health System Foundation. This campaign will promote cancer screening benefits, including mammograms and local resources.

The 2022 Tough Enough to Wear Pink T-shirt will be available for purchase at the Swiftel Center’s Active Heating Box Office.
