Spring break is a time when college students can relax and forget about their daily worries, right? Not if you are a member of South Dakota State University’s softball team.

While most students go home or travel to some exotic location for spring break, the Jacks will begin what could be one of their best seasons in years.

The Jacks have a new head coach, Shane Bouman, a handful of young players and key returners, which may all contribute to their success this season.

“We have a good nucleus … and the young and old players alike are learning every day,” Bouman said. “I think we are going to surprise a lot of people this season.”

Junior Steph Kimes had similar feelings about the upcoming season.

“The team has more unity this year,” Kimes said. “We respect each other more and that makes us play better. I think we will have a strong season and get better every year.”

Bouman and the softball team have high expectations for this season.

Bouman would like to see the Jacks compete for a top spot in the conference this year, and in the future, become a consistent contender for the NCC championship and even have a chance at a national championship.

“I just want to give them the opportunity to compete at the highest level,” Bouman said.

The softball team’s first game is against the defending national champion, University of Nebraska Omaha, March 11. The Jacks then travel to Northwest Missouri State, Pittsburg State (Kan.) and Washburn University before the end of spring break.

Junior Steph Kimes said that after weeks of practicing, the team is excited to get out and play.
