The South Dakota State University volleyball team recorded its first defeat of the season in a match against Minnesota-Duluth Sept. 13.

The second match of the NCC/NSIC Crossover proved a difficult one as the Jacks fell in five (30-23, 30-19, 25-30, 26-30, 15-13).

Despite the loss, senior Angie Rime managed to tally 53 assists for a career total of 4,649. The game earned her the SDSU career title in set assists.

Wendy O’Neill led the Jacks with 19 kills, while Sarah Simet had 15 digs.

The tournament opener against Minnesota State-Moorhead earlier that day posed less of a challenge, with the Jacks taking the game in three.

Kelly Hoemann led offensively with 11 kills and four blocks. Senior Liz Archer led with 19 digs, while Rime had 39 more set assists and eight digs.

The Jacks also dominated the closing game of the tournament against Winona State. SDSU took the game in four- 30-27, 30-21, 26-30, 30-14.

Rime recorded 55 more set assists.

The tournament outcome leaves the Jacks with a season record of 11-1.

SDSU action resumes Sept. 18 when the Jacks go up against Southwest State in Marshall, Minn. They begin official NCC play Sept. 20 against Minnesota State-Mankato.
