The SDSU softball team went 2-4 in action at the Pittsburg State Invitational this past weekend in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The Jackrabbits started the weekend with a pair of losses, falling 6-3 to Bellevue (Neb.) and 4-3 to Fort Hays State (Kan.).
Bellevue was able to take control of the game with a five-run third inning that was fueled by some Jackrabbit errors.
Lindsay Distel hit her second home run of the season and Meggan Staton had two hits for SDSU against Bellevue. Jackie Sorenson took the loss for the Jacks.
The softball team fell behind Fort Hays State 4-0 in the first inning with errors leading to two unearned runs.
SDSU chipped away at the lead, but a seventh-inning rally fell short. Staton was the losing pitcher.
Ashley Kalina and Gabby Smith each had two hits for the Jacks in the losing effort.
SDSU bounced back to start the next day with a 4-3 comeback victory over Oklahoma Baptist as Staton hit a two-run, game-winning triple.
The Jackrabbit rally was started by the tying run reaching base on a dropped third strike. Sorenson picked up her fourth win of the season with the victory.
The softball team dropped their next game as they fell to Missouri Southern 6-4.
SDSU had an early 2-1 lead, but Missouri Southern scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth to give themselves a 6-2 lead before the Jacks made it close with two runs in the sixth.
Bobbie Jo Mitchell hit a home run in the losing effort for SDSU. Staton took the loss for the Jacks.
SDSU then avenged a loss from the previous day as they trounced Bellevue 16-7 in five innings.
The Jacks were hurt by errors as they fell behind 6-3 after two innings, but they put the game away with six-run innings in the third and fifth innings. Mandi Geis, Ali Adair, Staton, Smith, and Alissa Bernth had extra-base hits to fuel the Jackrabbit attack with Staton earning her sixth victory of the season.
The Jacks ended their weekend with a 6-1 defeat by Oklahoma Baptist.
SDSU was held to only two hits. Staton gave up a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Jacks behind 4-0 as she was tagged with the loss.
SDSU is now 10-8 on the season and travels south this week as they play games against Missouri Western at St. Joseph, Missouri, and participate in the Northwest Classic at Mayville, Missouri.
The Jacks then travel to Sioux Falls on Tuesday April 1 for a doubleheader against Augustana.
