Cross country teams finish first in season opener

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams claimed individual and team titles at the Augustana Open on Saturday.
On the women’s side, the individual title was captured by senior Sheena Dauer, winning the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:00. Angela Fisher of Creighton, Neb. finished second with a time of 18:20.
The women Jacks had two other competitors finish in the top 10. Kaylee Keating came in sixth in 18:59 and Becka Mansheim took eight at 19 minutes flat.
Overall, SDSU took first place with 35 points. Augustana followed with 43 points and Creighton placed third with 53 points.
The men’s team proved to be equally as successful when junior Brad Lowery lead the team to victory, placing first with a time of 25:26 in the 8,000-meter race.
Six more Jacks placed in the top 10. Senior Greg Darbyshire took fifth with a time of 26:29, followed by sixth-place junior Clayton Lang in 26:42.
Sophomore Scott Roby placed seventh in 26:43, junior Mike Steele placed eighth in 26:49, freshman Joel Teachout placed ninth in 26:54 and newcomer Jeremy Van Veen took 10th in 26:56.
Overall team standings put SDSU in first place wih 23 points, Doane, Neb. in second with 63 points and Augustana in third with 70 points.
Both teams will next compete on Sept. 27 at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
