The SDSU women’s soccer team toppled the Wayne State Wildcats Saturday 4-0 as they played their fourth home game of the season.

After a windy day of competition at the Fishback Soccer Park, the victory over the Wildcats improves their record to 5-1-1 and set the school record for an ubeaten streak of six games.

Head soccer coach Lang Wedemeyer said he was pleased with the team’s performance on the field this weekend.

“It was a solid game for us,” he said.

The first goal of the game came in the 44th minute of the first half from junior forwad Molly Scharfenkamp

Assistance came off a free kick from junior midfielder Michelle Rahe.

At the end of the first half SDSU had 11 shots on goal with the Wildcats trailing at one.

“The wind was a big factor for us, but they did a good job and didn’t give up any goals in the first half,” Wedemeyer said.

With the wind at their backs, the second half of the game was even more successful for the Jackrabbits as they shot three more goals past Wildcats goalkeeper Erika Mather.

Wedemeyer said the change in direction gave them even more of an advantage over the the opposition.

The second goal came 14 minutes into the second half from senior forward and four-year team veteran Melissa Speiser with an assist by junior Amy Goodrich.

The third goal came from Goodrich, assisted by Speiser and junior defense Dessie Hoppes.

The fourth, coming 51 seconds later, was from Speiser, her fifth goal for the season, with an assist by freshman midfielder Janel Brown.

Total shots-on-goal for the Jacks was 28, compared to the Wildcats’ two, with five each coming from Speiser, junior midfielder Michelle Rahe and senior Kara Carpenter.

SDSU goalkeepers Erin Miller and Jennifer Davis did not have to make any saves.

The socccer team will compete next at the Central Missouri Classic in Warrensburg, Mo. this weekend.

Their next home game is against North Dakota State on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m.
