The SDSU men’s hockey team improved their record to 4-0 on Friday as they defeated USD 6-1 at the Larson Ice Center.
The first goal of the game came from USD early in the first period, followed by three more from the Jacks. The frist-period SDSU goals came from Andy Schuster with an assist from Giles Stifter, Dustin Goranson with an assist from Pat Deniger, and Jeff Lemire with an assist from Goranson.
By the end of the first period, the score was 3-1 and the Jacks had outshot USD 26-1.
The second period was tougher for the Jacks with only eight shots on goal and the team receiving three of their five penalties, men’s hockey coach Martin Schipull said.
By the end of the game, SDSU had outshot the Jacks 47-19 and won the game with a five-goal advantage.
Schipull said the game was good overall, but their upcoming matches will be tough for the team, especially for the younger players.
The team faces off against St. Cloud State University on Friday and Saturday, and the next home games for the team will be on Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. against Minnesota State-Mankato.
“There’s just a lot of good hockey players in those towns, and that’s why their clubs are so good,” Schipull said. “They play at a level higher than us, actually, so I think our young folks are in for somewhat of a rude awakening.”
