The Lady Jackrabbits terminated USD’s seven-game winning streak by defeating the Coyotes 61-58 at the Dakota dome in Vermillion on Saturday.
Throughout most of the game, the Jacks led the Coyotes by a few points. At halftime SDSU led by a score of 30-27. With 14:52 remaining in the game, USD captured the lead 40-39.However, the Jacks regained the lead within a couple minutes.
In the first half freshman Megan Vogel led all players with 15 points and 6 rebounds. However, in the second half Vogel found herself in foul trouble and finished the game with a total of 17. While sophomore guard Heather Sieler added 16, junior forward Shannon Schlagel submitted 14.
Even though Vogel scored only two points in the second half, her two points played an essential part in the Jack’s victory. With 1:05 remaining in the game, SDSU led by only one point. As the shot clock ran out, Vogel scored her jump shot. After a Coyote missed shot, Erin Bourne of USD fouled Sieler.
Sieler sunk both of her free throws. However, with twelve seconds left Mandy Koupal for the Coyotes replied with a three-pointer.
It was not enough. The Jacks went on to win 61-58.
Not only did this win allow the Jacks to maintain their pride against a long time rivalry, but it also aided in securing a conference title.
