Officer David Erickson, who has been with the Brookings Police Department for seven years, offers some advice to women.

“Don’t walk alone, being with someone is the biggest deterrent,” said Erickson.

Erickson advises women not to get in vehicles with strangers. It may seem like elementary advice, but “it’s tempting when it’s cold out or you’ve had too much to drink,” said Erickson.

“Do not ever get into a vehicle with someone that you do not know,” he said.

Erickson suggests students bring their own alcohol to parties.

“Accepting alcohol from people that you don’t know or don’t know very well can be very dangerous,”said Erickson.

In bar situations, Erickson suggests having a friend watch your drink.

“Never leave your drink unattended,” he said.

According to Erickson, date-rape drugs are not common in this area; but women should be aware of them anyway.

“If date-rape drugs are used, they are very hard to place because many are not traceable,” said Erickson.

Erickson said mace often gives women “a false sense of security.” Erickson said often the mace is not in a place where it can be easily accessed.

“Don’t feel invincible because you have mace in your purse,” he said.
