On Aug. 28, SDSU faculty will officially welcome new students to campus.

At 4:30 p.m., Staters for State, the SDSU Alumni Association and the University Program Council will put on A STATEly Beginning and Welcome Back Bash. Students are welcome to stop by the alumni building on Medary Avenue and continue into Sylvan Green while being welcomed by many SDSU faculty members and President Peggy Miller.

“The purpose of this tradition is to make the students feel like part of the university from the beginning,” said Jim Speirs, programs coordinator for the SDSU Alumni Association.

The picnic will include a large meal and inflatable games provided by the University Program Council. Speakers will start at 5 p.m. and include President Miller, Alumni Association Director V.J. Smith and Staters for State President Michaela Oetken.

Also during A STATEly Beginning, each student will receive a coin to throw into a fountain. On graduation day, the student will get a coin back.

“The coin is an important aspect,” said Speirs. “It’s a great way to tie in being a student now and always being an alum.”

At 7 p.m., the Profits, out of Madison, Wis., will take the stage for a free concert.

Their sound is described as a “mix between John Mayer and Coldplay,” according to John Paul Roney, the lead singer and songwriter for the band.

The band has been together for three years now, originating at the University of Wisconsin campus. After a few changes in the lineup, the band is ready and excited to be on stage again.

“I’ve never been more excited to play music than right now,” said Roney.

The Profits have been awarded Madison’s Best Pop Artist (a people’s choice award) by the Madison Area Music Awards. They are touring through many college campuses throughout the Midwest for their Astronaut 2.0 tour.

“If people come out, they’re going to have fun,” said Roney. “I think that everyone can enjoy something about our music.”
