The Jackrabbits hosted the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix last Thursday at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jacks lost the match 3-0, dropping their record to two wins, three losses and one tie.
The scoring started for the Phoenix when Stephanie Gross scored in the 19th minute. Sarah Oligney, who would later score the Phoenix’s second goal of the game in the 38th minute, assisted Gross.
Although the Jacks trailed at halftime, they had chances to score in the first half, but could not capitalize. Janel Brown had a penalty kick midway through the first half, but she missed high. The scoring ended when Leah Larson scored in the 66th minute, making the final score three to zero.
Before the game, the SDSU Athletic Department hosted a free tailgate. Root beer floats and hot dogs were provided between 5:30p.m and 6:30.p.m. The tailgate was the first of the year put on by the department. The next athletic department sponsored tailgate will be before the first home volleyball match Sept. 27, from 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. in the HPER parking lot.
The department hopes to make tailgating a tradition before sports other than football. Justin Durham, who was in charge of the soccer tailgate, said, “We want to try to get this to be more traditional. We want it to catch on with other sports.”
Another goal of the department is to boost the number of people at each game. “We try to increase attendance,” Durham said.
The next soccer game for the Jacks is against Oregon on Sept. 23. The Jacks do not return home for another game until the middle of October when they face the University of Montana.
