Coming off a strong showing in Rochester, Minn., the SDSU club hockey team extended their winning streak to five games, with one against USD and two over Creighton University.
After not playing USD last season, the Jacks traveled to Yankton to battle with the Coyotes. SDSU emerged victorious, claiming a 3-2 victory on Nov. 30.
The next day, the Jacks opened up a two-game series with Creighton at home. The Jacks jumped out to an early lead, scoring five goals in the first period.
“We played one great period of hockey Friday night versus Creighton, the first period. After that we fell into some bad habits,” said Head Coach Nate Bofenkamp.
The game turned sloppy in the second period, as the amount of penalties picked up, totaling 24 in the game. The Jacks dominated the game, winning 9-2, and out-shooting Creighton 47-19 in the game.
Dan Ingemanson scored the victory in net, stopping 17 shots. Three Jacks, Roy Sando, Ryan Nelson and Jake Gustafson scored two goals.
After blowing out Creighton in the first game, the Jacks needed to be careful to not overlook them in the second game.
They didn’t. With another good start, the Jacks out-shot Creighton 14-1 in the first period.
“Saturday night we came out strong again in the first period,” Bofenkamp said.
After a strong first period, the game tightened up. SDSU dominated the shots on goal, 39-12, but only managed to score three goals. The second game of the series was much cleaner with only 10 penalties.
Gustafson scored another two goals Saturday night, leading the Jacks’ offense. Picking up the win in net in Saturday night’s game was Brad Van Santen.
The team travels on the road for games against the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Dec. 8 and 9, looking to keep their hot streak going.
“We hope to keep our five game winning streak going to end the semester,” Bofenkamp said.
