This week we will officially swear in our new SA Senate president and vice president, the two men who will be representing us as a student body for the next year. And we didn’t vote for them.

I realize this has been a controversy for the last month, bringing to light the supposed student apathy when it comes to running for office. Everyone can seem to point fingers, but no one will step up to the plate and run for the presidency themselves.

As disappointing as it is to see so few people willing to take the responsibility of leading our students, I realize that this is no small feat. Knowing that, I’m confident that even though these two men were not elected, they are very qualified for the job.

My confidence stems from my trust in Alex Brown. Browner has been a friend of mine since around sophomore year here at SDSU, and throughout these years I’ve known him, I’ve come to the realization that this is a guy tha] has his stuff figured out.

He’s worked hard on senate, and made friends throughout all the colleges in our university. He isn’t out to kiss the butts of the administration, but is responsible enough to work with them in a way that best represents the students. This is a hard balance to maintain. Trust me.

I don’t really personally know Chris Schaefer, but I do know that he, too, has worked hard on the senate … and if Browner is willing to pair up with him, he’s gotta be good.

I realize that I sound like a campaign ad. No, no one is paying me for this. The real point I’m trying to make is that just because we didn’t get to vote for these two doesn’t mean they won’t do one hell of a job for SDSU.

I’m not sure anyone’s stopped to consider that maybe they went unopposed for a reason-many of the people that may have run against the team already realized how challenging it would have been to beat them.

In the next year, I think we can look forward to some beneficial changes here at SDSU. Some of the leaders’ goals include creating a student technology committee, development of an off-campus housing association to help those students living off campus and the creation of a book rental program through the bookstore and the library to alleviate textbook costs to students.

And that’s just getting started.

These guys have endless possibilities ahead of them, and the ability to utilize all of their resources in order to achieve their goals. They know what they’re in for, and I know they will do everything in their power to leave this university a better place.

So this weekend, or next weekend, or the weekends after that, when you’re out enjoying your favorite beverage, raise your glasses to these two leaders who are willing to sacrifice their social lives and free time just to make a difference here at SDSU. Majority elected or not.
