A different kind of lab was officially unveiled on March 15 in Crothers Engineering Hall. The Jerome Lohr Structures Laboratory tests large structural pieces of material for strength and endurance.

“This is a great experience for students to see what is in the book first hand,” said Nadim Wehbe, associate professor of civil engineering and coordinator of the lab. The lab will also help with applying theories and techniques, Wehbe said.

Nick Haltvick, president of the SDSU chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, said he was immediately impressed with the lab. Haltvick also said that the lab will be beneficial for graduate research.

Jason Zemlicka, a civil engineering graduate student, is currently doing his thesis by testing bridge girders with different concrete.

The lab will bring money to the university through grants because of the student projects, Zemlicka added.

“The lab will help the school out by leaps and bounds,” said Haltvick.

Haltvick also said the lab makes the school more attractive by helping it keep up with current technology.

The lab is named after Jerry Lohr, a 1958 civil engineering graduate and major fundraiser. Lohr currently owns J.Lohr Vineyards and Wines in California.
