On Sept. 7 the SDSU soccer team outplayed Oakland University in the first Summit League game ever in SDSU history. The Jacks (2-0-1,1-0-0) surprised Oakland (1-3-0,1-1-0) by shutting them out 3-0 at the Fishback Soccer Complex.
Oakland University was the heavy favorite to win the Summit League Championships, according to the Summit League pre-season polls, while the Jacks were picked to finish only seventh place.
“The win against Oakland, although I knew they would be competitive? was a pleasant surprise,” head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. “But we have certainly felt in these first three games we would be competitive.”
The Jacks found the net at 17:48 in the first half as Kaitlin Justice’s shot from Kellyn Farrell went past Oakland’s goal keeper, Kim Herbst, making the score 1-0 in favor of SDSU.
Jessica Heine scored the second goal of the game for the Jacks on a penalty shot at 71:47 to put the Jacks up 2-0 and the game out of reach. Ten minutes later Jackrabbit striker Chelsea Lira scored on an assist from Farrell to put the nail in the coffin against the visiting Grizzlies, making the score 3-0. It was the first goal for Justice, Heine and Lira this season.
Farrell led the Jacks with four shots on the game. Farrell, a junior from Littleton, Colo., was named the Summit League offensive player of the week. In every game of the season, Farrell has either scored or made an assist.
SDSU goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso recorded a blank slate for the second time early in the season.
The Jacks defense only allowed the Golden Grizzlies two shots for the whole game.
The Jackrabbits outshot Oakland 14 to 10 and won the battle of shots on goal seven to two.
The Jacks look to stay undefeated against fellow Summit League opponent Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, on Sept. 13.
