The SDSU Dairy Products Judging Team placed third at the 86th Collegiate Dairy Products Evaluation Contest on Oct. 16 in Las Vegas, Nev.
“We prepare for two years to go to this contest,” Tori Boomgaarden, a senior dairy production major and member of the team, said. “It’s like our Superbowl.”
To prepare for this competition, students learned how to evaluate the flavor, body, texture and appearance of dairy products, all of which are important to the dairy industry and to the consumer.
Once the team members get out into the industry, Boomgaarden, said, “We’re going to be the people who taste the product, know what’s wrong with it and how to fix it.”
The team won first at the regional contest before advancing to nationals. According to team coach and professor of dairy science Bob Baer, this is the 71st time that SDSU has competed in the National Dairy Products Judging Contest.
