It’s another Valentine’s Day and another year that I’m single. While I could be bitter and come to hate the day allegedly made by the card companies, I’ll try to be positive. However, if I hear the phrase “Singles’ Awareness Day,” blood will start shooting out my ears. Instead, I’ll provide some advice.

Gentlemen, let me give you fair warning. If your idea of Valentine’s Day music is that Reba McEntire CD you got on the cheap rack at Hallmark, listen up. I’ve dredged through my music library to find the music to give to your loved one this Valentine’s Day. These bonafide hits are pure classic rock (and country) gold.

Blood, Sweat and Tears – You’ve Made Me So Very HappyWhy It’s Great:Copious amounts of trumpet and organ and a raspy blues singer make this an instant classic. Plus, it captures all of the romance of crushed velvet and ’70s mustaches.

Billy Joel – She’s Always A Woman To MeWhy It’s Great:Another ’70s classic, Billy Joel throws out a bunch of adjectives describing his woman. Only use this if more than 66 percent of the descriptions actually match your partner.

Al Green – Let’s Stay TogetherWhy It’s Great:Al Green may be a man of God nowadays, but his music still repels clothes.

Stevie Wonder – You’re The Sunshine Of My LifeWhy It’s Great:All I have to say is Stevie Wonder. He probably writes love songs just to keep his fireplace warm.

Elton John – Your SongWhy It’s Great:It’s a standard. It’s even personalized!

Alison Krauss – When You Say Nothing At AllWhy It’s Great:This is the only country song I’m going to recommend. Ms. Krauss’s voice is charming, and the lyrics are amazing. This song is too good for a sarcastic quip.

Paul McCartney – Maybe I’m AmazedWhy It’s Great:Mr. McCartney was only a member of some British pop band before he wrote this song. I guess he’s qualified to make your girlfriend swoon.

Modern English – Melt With YouWhy It’s Great:“Melt With You” is complicated and deep. This is the closest to emo I will venture. If that’s what you’re looking for, go cry some more.
