The SDSU women’s hockey team defeated Minot State University 12-3 on Feb. 10, Natalie Domagala scored four goals to lead the Jackrabbits in their final game of the season.

The Jacks grabbed a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period thanks to Domagala’s four goals and another goal by Andi Ribstein. The first period lead was all the Jacks needed to secure the win.

The Jacks defense shut out the Beavers for the final two periods after giving up three goals in the first. “In the locker room I just told the team, let’s not worry about scoring, the goals will come, let’s worry about defense,” SDSU head coach Dallas Shearer said.

The Jackrabbits scored seven goals in the second period to complete the rout. The Jacks out shot the Beavers 16-7 in the second period.

Domagala scored two goals within the first minute of the game with goals at the 16:50 mark and 16:38 mark. Hayley Dommett scored for MSU, cutting the lead to 2-1 with 15:11 remaining. Domagala scored again with 13:57 left in the period. The Beavers answered back with a goal from Abbey Everson to put MSU within one goal at 3-2 with 13:35 left.

A Domagala goal and assist by Ashley Verdeck and Christy Wey made the score 4-2. With 4:08 remaining, Andi Ribstein scored a goal for the Jacks to make the score 5-2. Betsy Doubek scored an unassisted goal with 2:11 remaining to put MSU within two scores.

For SDSU, Domagala had four goals and three assists. “She’s far and above the number one scorer in the nation,” Shearer said.

Verdeck scored three goals for the Jacks and added three assists. Wey had one goal and four assists. Callie Mowry and Alyssa Clasen each scored one goal and one assist. Amanda Carlson and Ribstein each had one goal. Alyson Lanciki added an assist for SDSU. Brigitte Norby allowed three goals on 25 shots.

For MSU, Doubek had one goal and one assist to lead the Beavers. Dommett and Everson each had one goal. Ashley Goudy added an assist for MSU. Danille Bakke allowed 12 goals on 37 shots for the Beavers.

“We definitely came out with a high energy, to finish the season with a couple wins, put some goals in, in the second and third period we played a lot better all around, it was just a good game for us,” Shearer said.

The SDSU Jackrabbit women’s hockey team finished the 2007-2008 season with a 10-6 overall record on the season.
