Two former SDSU standouts signed as free agents with two AFC West Teams over the weekend.
Former offensive lineman, Mitch Erickson, was signed by the Denver Broncos. The Hutchinson, Minn., native and fouryear starter has earned many awards, including the 2007 AFCA Football Championship Subdivision Coaches’ All-American Team. He was also a Great West All-Conference selection and was named to the academic all-conference team. With Erickson leading the way, the Jackrabbits averaged 34.2 points per game and the offensive line allowed only 12 sacks for the season.
Brookings native and former tight end Chris Wagner signed with the silver and black of the Oakland Raiders. The 6-foot-6, 255 pound player earned first-team, all-Great West Football Conference honors as a junior, as he had 24 catches for 265 yards and two touchdowns. He added 25 receptions for 249 yards and four trips to the end zone last year, and he got second team GWFC recognition.
“Both are really outstanding student athletes they will do just like ex-SDSU players and put their best foot forward and have a really good chance to make teams,” said Fred Oien SDSU director of athletics.
Both Wagner and Erickson will report to their respected teams’ mini-camp in May of this year.
