Jacks get three of four most valuable honors

SDSU posted a 4-1 victory in equitation over fences and lost 3-2 in equitation on the flat to the Fresno State (Calif.) Bulldogs in the Jackrabbits’ first varsity equestrian head-to-head competition of the season. SDSU won the overall competition 13-7 over FSU on Oct. 11 at the Swiftel Center.
ENGLISH
SDSU’s Marian Michalson earned the most valuable honor in equitation on the flat with an overall score of 85.
FSU’s Kelsey Bullock defeated Laura Hoff, 66-64; Tarynn Shada beat SDSU’s Andrea Routzon, 71-65. Routzon is a recent transfer from Stephen F. Austin.
Kim Hewson-Budnik also defeated Meredith Sauer, 81-0, to give the Bulldogs a narrow victory over the Jackrabbits.
The two wins for the Jacks in equitation on the flat came by way of Allison Carie defeating Caitlin Marshall, 81-78, and Michalson getting the best of Bulldog rider Jessica Kissell, 85-82.
In the equitation over fences competition, SDSU’s Victoria Pecak defeated FSU’s Lisa Wells, 78-70, and Melissa Zajac beat out Cambria Kissell, 78-60.
Routzon defeated Casey Jo McDonald, 75-50, and Sauer won over Jennifer Jory, 68-67.
FSU’s lone victory in equitation over fences was by way of Katie Nenneker’s defeat of SDSU’s Michalson, 86-80.
WESTERN
SDSU’s Kaylee Mundwiler and Lydia Placzek swept their Western events.
Mundwiler, a junior from Milbank, recorded a score of 80.5 in the horsemanship competition, earning the most valuable award. Placzek turned in the high score of reigning, with a mark of 78 to earn her own most valuable award.
SDSU defeated Fresno State 4-1 in the Western-Horsemanship.
SDSU’s Jordanne Blair added a pair of victories in the Western events, winning her head-to-head match-up in horsemanship with a runner-up score of 79.5, as well as posting a reigning score of 76.
For FSU, Adrianne Smith was the lone victor on the squad, defeating SDSU’s Hillary Siebels, 74.5-70, in the horsemanship portion.
For the Jacks, Meghan Gunn defeated Allie Warkentin, 75.5-75. Fellow Jackrabbit Abby Knobbe defeated FSU’s Madison Silver, 78.5-77, and Blair defeated Asheline Beeson, 79.5-79.
In reining competition, SDSU defeated FSU, 3-2. Placzek defeated Kaitlyn Coyes, 78-69, while Jackrabbit rider Angela Gebhart defeated Jill Tebbe, 76.5-76.
The next day (Oct.12) SDSU fell to Minnesota-Crookston, 9-7.
The loss put them at 1-1 in head-to-head competitions for the season.
Next up for the Jacks is a rematch against Minnesota-Crookston. The two will square off in Crookston, Minn., on Oct. 25-26. Only the Western side will take place in the two-team match-up.
