The SDSU women’s swimming team lost to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 135.5-102.5 on Nov. 7 at the HPER Center Pool.
SDSU junior Katie Budahl came within .25 seconds of breaking her own school record that she set last weekend in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the meet, she finished first with a time of 1:06.73.
Junior Emily Tschetter took second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.42 for SDSU.
“We had some really good races, too: Katie in the 100 breaststroke and Emily Tschetter in the 100 breaststroke. Emily put up, really, a really good time. All the athletes had a really good meet,” SDSU head coach Brad Erickson said.
The Jackrabbits won their first event of the season when the team of Jessica Ferley, Christina Gerometta, Mallory Onisk and Budahl came in first with a time of 3:59.08 in the 400-yard medley relay.
“I thought they swam very, very well. Right from the start our melody relay was about a second off our school record.
“To do that this early in the season, when you’re swimming really hard and not rested, is really good. We had some good individual performances in that race,” Erickson said.
Gerometta, a junior from Farmington Hills, Michigan, won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.54.
She was the first Jackrabbit to win an individual race on the night.
Onisk edged UWGB’s Katelyn Bodin by .04 seconds to take the 100 butterfly in 58.48 seconds.
In the 200 individual medley, Budahl, Rachel Musser and Lynn Wegner placed second, third and fourth, respectively. UWGB’s Danielle DeGrand, a senior, won the race in a time of 2:11.68.
In the one-meter dive, Breanna Torkelson and Sasha Porter finished second and third. UWGB’s Lauren McGraw took first with a score of 199.35. Torkelson scored 199.05 and Porter scored 197.70.
The SDSU women will compete next in Greeley, Colo., in a triangular on Nov. 15 against Northern Iowa and host Northern Colorado.
In the men’s meet, the Jacks were led by freshman Nick Carter.
The freshman from Rogers, Ark., set a new school record with a time of 51.58 seconds. He also took second in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:44.32, and was a part of the medley relay which took second behind Wisconsin-Green Bay’s “A” relay team.
Another member of the second-place relay team was senior Cade Roberts. Roberts also took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.63.
Despite the Jacks having a good meet, the Jacks fell to UW-Green Bay, 145-86.
