SDSU hired former Dakota State volleyball coach Cynthia Henning as the new assistant volleyball coach on Jan. 23.

After nine seasons as DSU’s head coach, Henning compiled a 117-151 record on the way to making DSU a top team in the Dakota Athletic Conference.

When Henning was coaching at DSU, her teams rewrote almost every DSU volleyball record. Over 30 athletes that played for Henning broke records, including the school single-match records for kills, aces, digs, blocks and set assists.

Henning began her collegiate playing career at Eastern Wyoming Junior College and then continued at the University of Northern Colorado, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English education and a master’s degree in athletic administration.

Before joining the staff at Dakota State, Henning coached at Sioux Falls Washington High School, where she led the Warriors to six consecutive state tournament appearances and state tournament runner-up finishes in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Prior to her tenure at Washington, she worked as an assistant coach at the University of South Dakota for two seasons. Henning began her coaching career at Rangely High School in Rangely, Colo., where her teams won conference championships four consecutive years and made two state tournament appearances.
