The SDSU women’s tennis team went 2-2 on their Orlando, Fla., trip to compete in the Orlando Classic. The Jacks beat La Salle (Pa.) and St. Joseph’s (Pa.) but fell to Connecticut and Bryant (R.I).

March 9- Connecticut 6, SDSU 1

Bryna Nasenbeny was the only Jackrabbit to get a win against UConn, as she defeated Kelley LoRusso in three sets 6-1, 6-7, 10-4.

“Bryna Nasenbeny, our number one, won two matches at the top position, and her win against UConn was terrific,” SDSU head tennis coach Don Hanson said. “She finished 2-2, and as a freshman, playing number one is great work.”

March 10- Bryant 5, SDSU 2

The only two Jackrabbits to get a win against Bryant (R.I.) were Nellie Bloomberg, who defeated Bryant’s Dana Tausek 6-2, 6-2, and Megan McDougall who beat the Bulldogs’ Katie McCabe 6-1, 7-5.

SDSU’s Carrie Jansen took her singles match to three sets against Bryant’s Valeria Couto Cuervo, winning the first set 5-7 but dropping the final two 6-3 and 1-0.

March 11- SDSU 7, La Salle 0

SDSU dominated La Salle, as they swept all the competitions. Nasenbeny won her match for the Jacks 6-0, 6-1. Caitlin Brannen won 6-0, 6-3. Jansen, Katie Elifson and Bloomberg each swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0. SDSU’s McDougall won her match 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, Nasenbeny and Brannen teamed up to win 8-2 in doubles action. The team of Bloomberg and Jansen won 8-0. McDougall and Bethany Goeden also won 8-0

March 13- SDSU 5, St. Joseph’s 2

SDSU’s Brannen defeated Katy Borden 6-0, 6-1, and Bloomberg beat Krysta Contino for the Jacks 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Jansen tallied another singles victory for the Jacks when she defeated SJU’s Melissa Glick 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.

McDougall helped the Jacks defeat SJU with a win over Erin Malafronte 6-2, 6-4. Nasenbeny lost in singles action 6-3, 6-2 to Jennifer Kedzierski. Hawk’s Laura Matz defeated SDSU’s Elifson by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, the SDSU team of McDougall and Goeden won 8-5 over Malafronte and Courtney Scardellette, and Bloomberg and Jansen also claimed a victory over the Hawks team of Contino and Borden in a close 8-6 finish. St. Joseph’s doubles team of Kedzierski and Matz was able to defeat the team of Nasenbeny and Brannen 8-5.

“The women’s team in general performed great and were unlucky not to come back 3-1 instead of 2-2,” Hanson said. “The great thing is that every woman on the team won matches. We are excited about these young women, as we don’t have a senior on the team and we are gaining experience from every match we play. The future looks bright for women’s tennis at SDSU.”

The SDSU women’s record now sets at 7-6 in duals for the season. The Jacks will return to the court on March 21 for a match-up against St. Cloud State and St. Benedict (M.N.) in St. Cloud, Minn.
