The SDSU women’s track team competed in three different meets on April 17 – two in California and one in Iowa. Members of the track team went to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., and the Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Jackrabbits also competed in the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif., on April 19.

Mt. Sac Relays

Heather Wollman paced the Jacks in Walnut, Calif., as she broke a 14-year-old SDSU record in the open 400-meter run with a time of 55.07 seconds. Paula Burma set the record in 1985 with a time of 55.84.

“For Heather, it was not a matter of if, it was a matter of when. I think she is capable of more if she keeps progressing,” SDSU head coach Rod DeHaven said.

Claire Steinke finished 14th in the women’s 10,000-meter run with a season-best time of 36:42.94.

Bryan Clay Invitational

The SDSU 400-meter relay team of Megan Lauseng, Brittany Garner, Andrea Cota and Stacy Huss led the Jacks with a first-place finish in a time of 47.66, which was good for third all-time at SDSU.

Sara Ackman paced the Jacks in the field events, earning a second-place finish in the discus when she threw for 163 feet, 8 inches.

Kristi Mortenson helped the Jacks tie for third place in the pole vault with a jump of 11-01.75.

In the high jump, Lora Shearer finished tied for fourth with a jump of 5-05.00

Sioux City Relays

The Jacks scored a couple of ninth-place finishes: Joni Strom in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.22 and Anna Garner in the 5000-meter run in 19:16.98.

In the distance medley, the Jackrabbit team of Emily Smith, Strom, Amanda Frohling and Danielle McCann placed third in 12:35.11.

Beach Invitational

The Jackrabbits 400-meter relay team of Brittany Garner, Wollman, Lauseng and Huss broke a 16-year -old school record set in 1993 by Rana Schoorman, Christine Mason, Stacy Stewart and Tracy Stewart. The Jacks finished in a time of 3 minutes, 47.81 seconds.

“With Brittany and Heather, we probably have at least two quarter milers, and with Stacy, a 400-meter hurdler, it’s a pretty good group. The trick has been, at the end of the meets, being tired. Saturday we were able to cut it out and get the win,” DeHaven said.

Up next for the Jacks is SDSU Twilight on April 22 at Brookings High School.
