The SDSU men’s track team had some success at the Trojan Invitational in Madison, S.D., on March 28. Sean Burns led the Jacks with two second-place finishes, one in the shot put and one in the hammer throw, and a fifth-place finish in the discus.

Burns had a throw of 14.28 meters in the shot put, good for second, while Northwestern’s Logan Ogden came in first with a throw of 14.45.

Ogden also got first in the discus for Northwestern with a throw of 46.10, and Burns got fifth in the discus for SDSU with a throw of 38.91.

In the hammer throw, Burns got beat out by Andy Edison of Morningside who threw for 45.82, good for first. Burns threw for 41.38 en route to a second-place finish for SDSU.

Ronnie Kyllo got second for the Jacks in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes and 58.20 seconds, barely losing to Dakota State’s Matt Fideler who came in first in a time of 9:57.78.

“It was dangerously cold on Saturday [March 28] from the prospective that we didn’t want to get anyone injured sprinting or jumping in 30-degree temps,” SDSU head coach Rod DeHaven said. “We ran the steeplechasers at Madison because there wasn’t steeplechase scheduled at Yankton. As a coaching staff, we felt it was important to try to get something in this week regardless of level of competition because weather looks poor for this weekend.”

Some Jackrabbits also competed at the Mount Marty Invite on March 29 in Yankton. The meet was highlighted by a first-place performance from Ben Jasinski in the triple jump with his leap of 49 feet, 8 1/2 inches. That exceeded the qualifying mark for the NCAA Regionals in Norman, Okla., that will be held on May 29 to 30. Jasinski also won the long jump with a personal best jump of 22′ 9
