The men’s cross country team was the victim of good competition at the Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn.

Greg Vollmer led the Jacks with a 54th-place finish in a time of 24:06 in the 8k race.

Teammate Marshall Kambestad took 69th place in a time of 26:40. The Jacks finished 16th with 394 team points.

“It was not exactly what we had hoped for, Greg Vollmer had a solid race,” head coach Rod DeHaven said.

For the women’s team, Ashley Storm led the pack in 22nd place, as she helped the Jacks to a 10th-place finish. Nicole Davis came in 35th, finishing in 23:08.

The women finished 10th with 254 team points.

“We were 30 points out of sixth place,” DeHaven said. “Ashley Storm, Nicole Davis and Kelsey Aune had really good races.”

Up next for both teams is the only home meet of the season, the SDSU Classic on Oct. 3 at the Edgebrook Golf Course.

The men will have to see some improvements to succeed at the Classic.

“Michael Krsnak, Anthony Bongard and Marshall Kambestad need to have good races,” DeHaven said. “We need to put up or fifth place in the Summit League will be staring us in the face.”

The women need to continue to improve, as Minnesota will bring some good runners to the SDSU Classic along with Kansas State.

“The key thing is how we recover from the last race. We can’t sit back and relax,” DeHaven said. “We are in a decent spot. We need to keep working and getting better to reach our goals.”
