To wrap up the South Dakota State University Campus Women’s Coalition “Weeks to End Violence against Women,” Michael Kimmel – leading researcher, sociology professor and author from SUNY in Brooklyn, N.Y. – will speak at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Doner Auditorium on campus.

Kimmel will talk about his recent book, “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men.” The book is based on more than 400 interviews, over a four-year span, with young men ages 16 to 26. Kimmel’s study shows that the guys who live in “Guyland” are mostly white, middle-class, totally confused and cannot commit to their relationships, work or lives.

Although they seem baffled by the riddles of manhood and responsibility, they submit to the “Guy Code” of locker-room behaviors, sexual conquests, bullying, violence and assuming a cocky jock pose that can rule over sacrifice and conformity of marriage and family.

According to his research, this demographic — 22 million strong — is obsessed with never wanting to grow up. In the end, Kimmel offers a highly practical guide for young men.

The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Kimmel’s book are available for purchase at the SDSU Bookstore and will also be at Donor before his presentation.
