Up and down weekend caps tournament season

A split in Springfield will have the Jacks in good shape entering Summit play.
The weekend started with a bang and ended with a thud for the Jackrabbit volleyball team at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Mo., Sept. 9 and 10.
Junior Kelli Fiegen came out firing in the first match of the tourney by knocking down a career-high 22 kills as well as six total blocks in a drama-filled five set win over Arkansas State.
The Jacks saw plenty of excitement with scores of 26-28, 25-21, 18-25, 30-28 and 15-11 to round out the match. The highlight came in the fourth set, as SDSU tied things up three times on match point and ended up winning to force a fifth set.
“They came out and played us really tough. They’re a pretty physical team and played pretty good defense against us and were able to shut down a couple of our offensive options,” head coach Phil McDaniel said.
As stressing as the first match may have been, the Jacks took care of Hofstra quite easily by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19 in game two of the tournament. Fiegen and fellow junior Kaitlin Klingemann were efficient in the match, as they had attack percentages of .591 and .474, respectively.
Then came the thud.
