Laugh your way into finals

Finals, procrastination and last-minute projects all have one thing in common: they’re not funny. You know what is funny? Comedians.

The University Program Council has teamed up with Tig Notaro and Tom Sharpe to bring some light to the monotony of the last few weeks of the semester. At 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, Notaro and Sharpe will take the stage at the PAC for Comedy Night. The event will be free to students.

“I saw Tig at Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington and I fell in love with her,” said Showcase Coordinator Elliott Strand. “I want it to go really well. She had the best crowd interaction ever. People were heckling her and she has such a quick wit and immediately had something to say to them.”

Notaro has appeared Comedy Central’s The Sarah Silverman Program, Dog Bites Man (with Zach Galifianakis) and in her own special. She has also appeared in sitcoms and made appearances on Last Comic Standing, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with Carson Daly and Comics Unleashed. Her list of comedy festival appearances is long and growing.

Sharpe also has a growing portfolio. He has appeared on Comedy Central, NBC and E!. He has also written for VH-1 and MTV2.

The duo is on a college tour with Sharpe opening for Notaro.

“We [2010-2011 UPC Coordinators] saw her at a national showcase event called NACA and literally, she was the only thing we could talk about,” said last year’s Showcase Coordinator and current UPC President Tom Brinker. “Of all the comedians I’ve seen as a part of UPC, she’s the most unique and the funniest.”

Next semester will also bring a female comedian right before finals week. Aisha Tyler, whose claim to fame is the voice of Lana Kane on FX’s Archer, and more recently, a co-host on CBS’ The Talk.
