Dancing with the Stars

By Katherine Clayton Lifestyles Editor February 11, 2015

Annual dance competition brings in a new set of students and stars

Students around campus will begin to notice there are stars among them once the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars begins on Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.

Dancing with the Stars is a free, four-week event sponsored by the University Program Council. Feb. 26, March 5 and March 19 will be the three other Dancing with the Stars events; each event will take place at the PAC at 8 p.m.

Bailey Jorgensen, a sophomore elementary education major, is the Special Events Coordinator for UPC. She is in charge of organizing different events on campus and is currently in charge of DWTS.

“[Dancing with the Stars] is just kind of an SDSU tradition … now,” Jorgensen said. “It is expected almost every year from the University Program Council.”

The program includes six dancers and six stars. The teams this year are Madelin Mack and Scott DesLauries, Matilyn Kerr and Aarron Schuelke, Mackenzie Klinkhammer and Steven Marienau, Olivia Siglin and Nathan Langston,  Annamarie Trevvett and Thayer Trenhaile and Jennifer Schall and Gerald Keith Peden.

Students around campus are beginning to take notice of the upcoming event.

Chesney Nagel, a freshman pre-nursing major, said that she heard about DWTS through Facebook.

“It sounds fun,” Nagel said. “[DWTS] will be interesting to see the different students dancing.

Jorgensen said that DWTS requires a lot of details including making reservations at the PAC for lightning, music and other services at the location; making video clips for each dancing couple; writing scripts for the hosts and getting judges for the competition.

This year Jorgensen will be hosting alongside a special cohost. “[Martin Jackson], he is the winner for last season, he will be cohosting with me,” Jorgensen said.

Each week the dancers will have to perform a themed dance. Week one is hip-hop, week two is country night, week three is eighties and the last week is the finale, where the dancers choose what type of dance they will do.

“University Program Council’s target or their goal is to make events that students can go to, whether that be entertainment or educational, this is more … entertainment for students to come and their peers be stars,” Jorgensen said. “Everyone should come.”
