Wrestling splits roadtrip duals

After going 5-1 on a six-match home stand that spanned nearly the whole month of January, the Jackrabbit wrestlers went 1-1 on the road during the past week with match-ups at No. 18 Wyoming and Air Force. 

The Jacks visited Laramie, Wyo. on Friday, Jan. 30 to face-off against the Cowboys. SDSU suffered a 10-32 loss, dropping their overall record to 8-6 and 1-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference.

The victory lifted the Cowboys to 6-2 on the season, 2-0 in the WWC. The only three victories for the Jacks came at the 141-, 149-, and 157-pound weight classes.

At 141, SDSU’s red-shirt freshman Luke Zilverburg won by decision over Cole Mendenhall by a score of 7-5, sophomore Alex Kocer also won by decision over Jake Elliot, 7-1, at 149 and No. 7 Cody Pack, the 157-pounder senior, defeated Archie Colgan by a major decision, 12-2. 

The Jacks continued their season on Sunday, Feb. 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Jacks rebounded and took the victory over Air Force, to improve to 9-7 on the season and 2-1 in the WWC.

Air Force fell to 1-7 over-all, 0-3 in the WWC. The Jacks took victories at the 133-, 149-, 157-, 174-, 184-, 197-, and 285-pound weight classes.

Jacks junior Brance Simms defeated Anthony McHugh, 6-4 in overtime, at 133. At 149, Kocer won by decision over Jerry McGinty by a score of 7-0. In the next match, Pack pulled off a major decision over Sam Kreimier, 13-4. At 174, freshman David Kocer won by major decision over Michael Billingsly, 16-5. Sophomore Brady Ayers, wrestling at 184, won by decision over Zen Ikehara by a score of 10-3. Roter, at 193, defeated Jack Carda by 6-3 decision. Heavyweight sophomore, J.J. Everard won by decision over Marcus Malacek, 5-2. 

“We knew we were going to get tested on the backend of the road trip,” Head Coach Chris Bono told gojacks.com. “Our guys responded and performed well. We are excited to get back home and in the room leading up to UVU.”

The wrestlers will return to Frost Arena on Friday, Feb. 6 to host Utah Valley University at 7 p.m. Utah Valley currently holds a record of 2-6.
