A new Meat Science Club has been established at SDSU during the 2024 to 2025 academic year. This club is a new opportunity to advance professional development and leadership in students interested in the meat science industry.
“The officers are working to open doors for students who have interests within the meat science industry that aren’t sure where to start,” Prexy Representative Brynn Lozinski said.
Those doors consist of internships, industry tours, research conferences and conventions at the student’s disposal while building connections with those in the industry along with meat science faculty and staff.
To continue the success of the new club, they’re hoping to recruit new members and build club involvement.
Recently, they hosted a fundraiser where they served brats along with Meat Science Club apparel to fund activities and events such as tours in the meat science industry.
In the fall 2024 semester, special elections were held with Charlee Peterson being elected to President, Jenna Dougherty to Vice President, Teigen Hadrick to treasurer and Brynn Lozinski and Elle Ploger becoming Prexy Representatives
Since establishment, the club has had a taco bar, decorated Christmas cookies and hosted a Kahoot night with insights on different internship opportunities in the meat industry.
They’ve heard from professionals from the industry, like Jon Frohling with ScottPec, where he shared his expertise about smokehouse and processed meats.
In order to establish the club, signatures of seven students were collected that would be active members. The students met with the program coordinator at the Student Engagement Office and a constitution was drafted up, then an advisor was selected to oversee the students. Once these steps were completed, the pitch was brought to Students’ Association.
The club typically meets once a month on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in Animal Science 129.
