South Dakota State split their last two games of the regular season at Fishback Soccer Park and now shift their focus to the Summit League Women’s Soccer Championship.
Denver
For the first time all season, SDSU was outshot by their opponent.
The Pioneers put up ten shots in the first half against the Jacks five. None connected going into halftime. It wasn’t until the 65th minute that Pioneer Liv Moritz scored. Ava Grate for the Jacks tied the game in the 69th minute, but Denver responded just four minutes later with Payten Ivins scoring the game winner.
Michaela McGowan led the Pioneers in shots with a season-high of eight and four on goal. Ella Frost was second with four shots and two on goal. Ivins put up three shots, including the game winning goal.
Mia Bosch led SDSU in shots with three. Five other Jackrabbits split the remaining total. The eight total shots marked SDSU’s lowest this season.
Oral Roberts
SDSU was outshot again, but this time the Jacks defeated their opponent.
Katelyn Beulke connected in the ninth minute of play for the game’s only goal. A seven-save effort by Stephanie Leckwold in the second half, her most this season, kept the Golden Eagles off the board.
ORU put up 13 shots to SDSU’s 11. Avery Murdzek put up three shots on the afternoon. Beulke and Mia Bosch each shot twice with four other players splitting the team’s remaining shots.
Samantha Guzman led the Golden Eagles with four shots and two on goal. Carson Arne, Zoe McCabe and Lela Stark each shot a pair while Ariana Fresquez, Jordan Grisby and Julia Thasaphong split the remaining three.
Fouls were commonplace during the match. SDSU had 11, while ORU had 14. Two yellow cards were given to the Golden Eagles in the first half: one on an assistant coach for persistent infringement, and another for unsporting behavior. Katherine Jones was given a yellow card for unsporting in the second half.
Summit League Championship – South Dakota
SDSU, looking to defend their conference title, finished third in the Summit League at 5-2-1 behind
North Dakota State and Denver. Both teams earned a bye while the Jacks will host sixth-seed South Dakota in the quarterfinals. Their last meeting on Oct. 11 ended in a 1-1 tie.
“Familiarity is a tremendous equalizer,” head coach Brock Thompson said. “That’s what makes the conference games so tight and the margins so small there, and the conference tournament it gets even smaller.”
Ashby Johnston and Izzy Quintavalle share the team lead in goals with four each. Johnston has a team-high 36 shots on the year, 17 shots on goal, and a pair of assists. Quintavalle has 17 shots on the year with seven on goal and one assist. With 10.8 shots a game, the Coyotes are eighth in the Summit League, only ahead of Omaha.
“I think the approach is to stay in the moment,” Thompson said. “This time of the year, moments will change games. The beauty about soccer is you never know which moment it will be.”
Game time is tomorrow night at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on the Summit League Network through Midco Sports Plus. The winner of this game will punch their ticket to the semifinal game in Denver next Thursday.
