The SDSU Jackrabbtits are WNIT Champions. The women’s basketball team defeated Seton Hall by a final score of 82-50 Saturday afternoon in front of a second straight sold-out crowd of 5,263 fans at Frost Arena.
SDSU was led by Kallie Theisen who posted 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Myah Selland had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Haleigh Timmer chipped in 14, Paiton Burckhard had 13 and Tori Nelson scored 11.
The Jacks dominated in all facets of the game. Rebounding was a difference-maker as SDSU, outrebounded the Pirates 57-32 including 17 offensive rebounds.
Points in the paint also came early and often as the Jacks outscored Seton Hall 40-20 in that category.
Defensively, SDSU was at the top of their game as they forced Seton Hall to shoot only 26.6% from the field and 22.2% from 3-point range.
“I thought our effort defensively was really good, our rebounding was really good, and couldn’t be happier for our team to experience this at home,” coach Aaron Johnston said.
SDSU started the game as hot as they had all season. Jumping to a 12-5 lead at the first media timeout. Then went on an 18-1 run that spanned over 5 minutes of game time to ultimately leading 25-7 after the first quarter.
The Jacks carried that momentum all the way into halftime leading 40-18.
Once the second half started you could tell SDSU wanted it more and they never took their foot off the gas. They led by 31 points after the third quarter 62-31.
In the fourth quarter, the Jacks stayed hot and built their lead to 75-42 and that gave an opportunity to let their four seniors, Tylee Irwin, Addison Hirschman, Haley Greer and Lauren Rongisch to play at Frost Arena for one final time at home.
“To be able to end on a win, at home, I couldn’t have asked for a better ending,” Irwin said after the game.
Selland and Timmer were named to the WNIT All-Tournament Team with Selland being named MVP of the Tournament.
The Jackrabbits end the year 29-9 and winning 26 of their last 28 games and has an active 16-game winning streak at Frost Arena.
