Hey you!

Yeah, you!

I see you there, breathing. Isn’t that great? I sure think so!

Isn’t life grand? You’re darn tootin’ it is.

I know there are a lot of people out there in this world who hate us. I’m not sure why.

I know I’m a pretty nice guy. I doubt you’ve done anything to really upset the international community.

In fact, I think if they just took the time to get to know us socially they might buy us a drink instead of bombing the bar.

I’m kind of an optimist though.

I like winter.

Actually, I find that people that live here and complain about the weather are really kind of boring.

Yeah, I know its cold, thanks for telling me, that’s why I’m wearing a coat. We live in South Dakota.

South Dakota where you can be shoveling four inches of snow on Tuesday and by Friday be sitting on your front porch wearing shorts and sandals, watching the roller bladers go by.

I love this state.

I feel that we could all stand to look on the bright side of life more often.

If you are reading this column hoping that it is half over you are not looking for the bight side.

You, my friend, are a pessimist.

Hey, that’s alright. You might get lucky.

I’m not saying I don’t get angry from time to time. I’m not even saying that I’m not fuming over something right now.

But if I just think happier, all of a sudden … I am!

Some, of course, will say that I am on crack.

These people are not pessimists, they are realists … Oops! I mean, they are jaded.

They feel life is kind of crappy so why not just look for the crap. Where is the fun in that?

Life is like a giant Easter egg hunt I say.

Sure, we may be living on the wrong end of a sewer pipe, but every now and then someone flushes a diamond ring down the toilet.

So, get out those screens and start filtering! Soon enough, you may be a richer person.

And if not, at least you won’t be spending your time worrying about the next time some lunatic will take out his perverse issues on innocent citizens.

Though DJ Steckelberg would like to be considered an optimist, most of us would refer to him as “woefully misguided.” Tell him what you think of his lack-of-realism at [email protected].
