Strange Combination Makes Great Album

This album smokes.

That’s all that needs to be said.

But for all you who need a description, here it is. The New Christs is a band fronted by former, and now current (they’ve reformed and an album is in the works), Radio Birdman vocalist Rob Younger. The band has had more line-ups than Deep Purple, but has never released a poor album.

The latest, “We Got This,” really does sound like the Stooges and the MC5 – two groups critics use to describe most new garage/punk rock. But the New Christs really deserve this comparison. Younger has played with former members of both groups in various projects and is old enough to have been into this music since it was first released in the ’60s.

The New Christs are more than a just a Detroit-rock revival band. They possess an eerie moodiness reminiscent of British groups like Joy Division. Through in some killer guitar work and you have the New Christs.

An enjoyable aspect of the New Christs is that is about the music; there is no silly gimmick, fashion statement or cultural movement attached. It’s just good music that will please anyone from punks to Goths to just plain old rock fans.

There isn’t a bad track on the album.
