The Students’ Association approved a revised absence resolution at the Nov. 22 meeting to present to the Academic Senate.
SA recently presented an absentee resolution to the Academic Senate that proposed an absence policy. SA President Amanda Mattingly said that SDSU does not currently have policy stating what actions an instructor can or can’t take in regard to unexcused absences.
Mattingly said that the original resolution was vetoed after the Academic Senate turned it down.
“Amanda took the resolution to the Academic Senate and it wasn’t taken well,” said Sen. Kristin Olsen, of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
A new resolution was prepared for the senate. The resolution stated that SA “would support initiating conversations about a universal absence policy,” Mattingly said.
The resolution failed to get the senate’s support.
The matter was brought back up for further discussion later in the meeting. The resolution was reworded to say that SDSU’s student body wants a universal absence policy, said Justin Larson, an at-large senator.
It was approved and the revised resolution will go before the Academic Senate at its Nov. 23 meeting.
In other SA business:
*The SA approved the 2005-2006 budget for the Prairie Repertory Theater.
The group was allocated $268,740, which is a 17 percent increase from last year.
*The State University Theater Department was granted its request for $62,000. This year’s requested amount is 31 percent higher than last year’s, said Donald Hebert, a professor for the department. He said the increase is needed “to catch up on expenses of some things that are piling up.”
*The SA approved the SDSU Judging Team Council’s budget of $16, 350, a 9.5 percent increase from last year.
Kelly Bruns, advisor, said the money is used to pay for hotels when the group travels to competitions.
