The men’s club hockey team kept it close but long in their battle against Bemidji State.

In the first game, Feb. 18, SDSU shot out to an early lead in the first period scoring four goals to Bemidji’s one. BSU came back to score three goals in the second closing the gap between them and SDSU. With the score tied 6-6 the game headed into overtime. Scoring the winning goal for the Jacks was sophomore forward Kevin Heinen and with the assist was junior defenseman Luke Tegels. Freshmen Levi Hendrickson also scored two goals for the Jacks while Roy Sando added two assists.

The two teams kept things all tied up in the next night as well. BSU took the lead early thanks to sloppy play and turnovers. They led going into the second period with a score of 3-1. They continued to play hard, outshooting SDSU 16-9 in the second period. SDSU won the scoring battle 4-2 in the second leaving it all tied up headed to the third period.

“We (now) carried the momentum and outshot BSU 16-10, but could not get the equalizer,” coach Marty Schipull said.

With the only shot in overtime, SDSU was victorious. Sando scored the winning goal for the Jacks, making it one of his three for the night.

SDSU faces St. Cloud State University next with two games at home on Feb. 25 and 26. Start time for Friday’s game is 8:30 p.m. and Saturday’s at 7:00 p.m. The team ends their season with the GPCHA League Tournament hosted by Dordt College March 4-5 in Yankton S.D.

“We will have the number one or two seed and be defending champions,” Schipull said.

The team’s record currently sits at 15-13 for the season.
