Dreamgirls’ delivers great singing, acting

After receiving amazing critical reviews, being nominated for countless awards and drawing tons of attention, I would have expected “Dreamgirls” to make its way through Brookings a little sooner than a month after its release. I find it a trifle annoying that we can be subjected to the torment of films such as “Epic Movie” on their opening weekend here in town, but must wait weeks for films actually worth seeing. At any rate, “Dreamgirls” did finally land in Brookings last week and, in my estimation, lived up to the hype surrounding it.

If you’ve been living under a rock, allow me to give you a basic rundown of the plot line. The movie is an adaptation of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical of the same name that came out in the early ’80s. The musical is loosely based on the history of Motown and the story of ’60s girl group The Supremes. The film version was in good hands considering it was written and directed by Bill Condon, who also directed “Chicago” a few years back.
