With the Red Sox winning their second World Series in four years, the Patriots staring down an undefeated season and the Celtics adding Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in the off-season, the center of the sports universe has officially relocated to Boston.
It is going so well for fans in Boston. Their Major League Soccer team, the New England Revolution, tried their hand in adding another championship to Boston but fell in the championship game to the Houston Dynamo.
The Patriots added two wide receivers, Donte’ Stallworth and Wes Welker, and were considered the favorite to come out of the AFC before acquiring the explosive Randy Moss on draft day from the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots have faced one challenge this season: overcoming the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth quarter on Nov. 4. The Patriots have also overcome distractions off the field, most notably their head coach Bill Belichick spying on the opposing teams. The New York Jets brought the claim up in the first week of the season. The very next week the Pats went out and crushed the San Diego Chargers 38-14. So far this season the Patriots are leaving little doubt at who the best team in the NFL is.
The Celtics are off to one of the best starts in their long and storied history. The team that has won the most titles in NBA history is one of the favorites to hang another banner from the rafters. The Big Three of Garnett, Allen and Paul Pierce are leading the way for the Celtics, who have not won an NBA title since 1985-86 and have not made it past the first round since 2004-2005. Both Garnett and Allen were acquired via trade, Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Allen from the Seattle Sonics. So far this season, the Big Three are not disappointing.
“At this point in our careers, we’ve already done a lot of name-making for ourselves,” Pierce said at the beginning of the season. “Now it’s time to win a championship.”
For a team that had not won a World Series since 1918, the Red Sox sure are making up for lost time. In 2007 as well as 2004, the Red Sox were one loss from being eliminated in the American League Championship Series, but they closed out winning six in a row and eight in a row respectively. The Red Sox were known for epic collapses in the playoffs; the most famous was Bill Buckner and the ball that somehow found its way through his legs in 1986, but now they are known for being one of the best teams in baseball. The Red Sox battle the New York Yankees every year for the AL Eastern title and for big-name free agents. Right now, the Red Sox are winning the battle over their biggest rivals.
The sports universe may find a new home in a few years, but right now it is clearly anchored in Boston.
