Jacks volleyball loses five matches in Florida tourneys

The SDSU women’s volleyball team lost to Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 5 in a match that went five sets, with VCU pulling out the 18-16 victory in the final set. VCU capitalized on two Jackrabbit service errors on match points to take the match 3-2 in the finale of the Hurricane Invitational.

Jackrabbit senior Mackenzie Angner set a new career high with 24 digs and tied a career high with 28 kills in the five-set loss.

SDSU won the first set 31-29 and dominated the third match with a 25-15 win, but VCU won the second set, 25-22, and the fourth set, 25-18.

In the first set, the Rams broke the 15-all tie with a 4-0 run until SDSU went on its own 4-0 run to tie the set at 23. VCU scored the next point to set up the first of its five set points at 24-23, but the Jackrabbits stopped all five attempts to win the set.

The Jackrabbits led 22-20 in the second set until a key VCU timeout. After the timeout, the Rams scored the next five points to win the set, 25-22.

The Jackrabbits cruised in the third set after a VCU service error gave them a 2-1 lead.

VCU stole back the momentum in the fourth set with a 25-18 win.

In the fifth set, the Jacks had an early 3-0 lead and never had a deficit, despite five ties, until the Rams went up 15-14. The Rams won 18-16 in the shortened fifth set.

Miami (Fla.) 3, SDSU 0

On Sept. 4, the Jacks faced the Miami Hurricanes in the first match of the Hurricane Invitational. Miami won the match by the set scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-21. Miami improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Jacks fell to 1-3.

Alabama 3, SDSU 1

The Jacks won the third set of the match to avoid the 3-0 sweep, but the Alabama Crimson Tide won the fourth set 25-20 to end the Jacks’ hopes of a comeback. Kelli Fiegen led the Jacks with 13 kills, and Angner had 13 kills.

Seminole Tri-Tournament

North Florida 3, SDSU 1

The Jackrabbits committed 14 service errors and got aced 11 times by the Ospreys. The Jacks won the first set 25-22 but lost 22-25 in the second set, 25-21 in the third set and 25-19 in the fourth set. Angner finished with 14 kills and 13 digs for a double-double.

Florida State 3, SDSU 0

The Jackrabbits finished up play in Florida with a 3-0 loss to Florida State on Sept. 7. The Seminoles won 25-19, 25-23 and 25-17.

Angner led all players in the match with 14 kills and was selected to the all-tournament team.

With the loss the Jacks, fell to 1-7 on the season. The Jacks next game will be Sept. 19 against Oral Roberts in Frost Arena.
