The SDSU men’s swimming team earned a fifth-place finish at the Summit League Championships on Feb. 21. James Motley broke the school record in the 1,650 freestyle to pace the Jacks.

Motley earned a second-place finish with a time of 16 minutes, 11.52 seconds. His time was more than 30 seconds better than the previous record set by Josh Mueller in 2006.

“James had an amazing 1650 swim. He swam a very smart race and had great splits (his 1000 was also a personal best). What else can you say about a swim that breaks the school record by 30 seconds,” head coach Brad Erickson said.

Cade Roberts, the only senior to compete on Feb. 21, finished his career with two top-five finishes. Roberts placed fourth in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:09.10.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Roberts teamed with John Bisson, Jason Garder and Mark Sandager to take fifth in a time of 3:11.67.

“Cade had a good weekend. He swam the 200 individual medley on Friday, and had a lifetime best swim by about two seconds. He was also on two other relays besides the 400 free relay,” Erickson said. “He led off the 400 free relay with a lifetime best 100 free, as well.”

Ryan Willett also finished in the top 10 in the 200 breaststroke when he placed ninth with a time of 2:13.06.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Matt Josephson placed seventh with a time of 1:57.53, while teammate Jon Wendel took 12th in 1:58.11.

SDSU sophomore Andrew Martin earned a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly when he finished in 1:55.85.

For the Jacks, Sandager earned a 15th-place finish in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 48.19 seconds.

“Several other swims earned all-time, top-10 times, so as a team, we were very pleased with our performances,” Erickson said.

Motley’s performance broke the oldest record that was still unbroken when he swam a 1:54.31 200-yard butterfly. Brad Reynolds set the old record when he swam the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.80 in 1979 at the Division-II Championships.

Chris Holzwarth set a school record in the 50-yard freestyle for the Jacks, doing it during a time trial at the conclusion of the meet.

SDSU earned 320 points just edging out IUPUI for fifth place at the meet. Oakland won its 10th consecutive title with a meet record score of 1,077.
