The fourth book in Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles starts out with the vampire Lestat in Florida on one of his hunts. I started this book and found that it made me feel very depressed and I had to set the book down for a while.
When I was able to pick up The Tale of the Body Thief and start reading it again, I started to get into the new storyline. Once I got pass the depressing beginning I completely enjoyed the book.
One thing I have always liked about Anne Rice is her amazing ability to describe a scene as if it is happening right in front of me. This book is no exception. Anne Rice can take several paragraphs to describe what a location looks like. It is easy for me to get lost in the book just by reading the different descriptions.
I loved reading about the different relationship advancing and changing. In this tale, the relationship between Lestat and Louis is shown in a new light. Throughout The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned it is easy to see that Lestat and Louis are working on rebuilding their relationship. In The Tale of The Body Thief their relationship now seems to be, in
a way, restored.
The relationship between Lestat and Louis is not the only relationship mentioned in the book. The new relationship between Lestat and David Talbot is introduced. David was first introduced in the book The Queen of the Damned. Lestat is fascinated by David and by how he has no desire to be changed into a vampire.
It is easy to see that Lestat has a destructive side. When the idea that he could actually become mortal again by talking to a ‘Body Thief’ and then switching bodies with him comes to Lestat’s attention, it distracts him. Now, I will not tell how the book ends because that would take away from the story. You will have to read it for yourself.
The book did start out slow and depressing in my mind but like so many different books, once I past a certain point in the story I absolutely loved the book. It was interesting to see how Lestat seems to act without a care until the end of the book.
The Tale of the Body Thief is full of different twists and turns. One thing to note is that this book might not agree with other’s beliefs on the spirit world. Like the other books in The Vampire Chronicles, this is full of things that can challenge a person’s beliefs.
I would suggest this book to anyone looking for a challenging read. Don’t get discouraged when this book seems difficult to read at first; it does pick up and gets very interesting indeed.
